How to find your face shape at home: 3 easy methods
By WinkCasa Team · 3 min read
The short answer: pull your hair back, look straight at a mirror, and compare the width of your forehead, cheekbones and jaw with the length of your face. The widest point and the shape of your chin tell you whether you are oval, round, square, heart-shaped or long.
Method 1: the mirror method (1 minute)
1. Tie your hair back so your whole face is visible.
2. Stand in good light and look straight ahead.
3. Notice the widest part of your face: forehead, cheekbones or jaw.
4. Notice your chin: rounded, pointed or square.
5. Compare the overall length to the width.
Method 2: the four-point measurement method
Use a soft tape or a ruler on a straight-on photo:
Face length: hairline to the bottom of the chin
Forehead width: across the widest part of the forehead
Cheekbone width: across the cheekbones
Jaw width: across the jaw angles
Then read the result in general terms:
Length clearly greater than cheekbone width, with a fairly straight jaw: long (oblong)
Forehead clearly wider than the jaw, with a narrower chin: heart
Jaw nearly as wide as the cheekbones, with a strong angle: square
Length and width similar, with soft, full cheeks: round
Slightly longer than wide, widest at the cheekbones, gently rounded chin: oval
Real faces blend shapes, so go with the closest match.
Method 3: use the free WinkCasa face shape finder
Our Find your look tool detects face landmarks on your selfie and suggests a shape, then shows where earrings, necklaces, hair clips and facial massage tools sit on your face. Face detection runs inside your browser: your photo is not uploaded unless you choose to save it. If the suggested shape feels wrong, you can change it with one tap.
The five most commonly used shapes are oval, round, square, heart and long (oblong). Some guides add diamond.
Can a face be more than one shape?
Yes. Many faces sit between two shapes. Choose the closest match and focus on balancing your most prominent feature.
Is a face shape finder app accurate?
It is a helpful guide, not an exact measurement. Lighting, camera angle and hair can change the result, so use a bright, straight-on photo with your hair back and adjust the shape if it does not feel right.
Is it safe to upload my selfie to a face shape tool?
It depends on the tool. WinkCasa's finder runs in your browser and does not upload your photo unless you tick a consent box and choose to save it. Always check a tool's privacy policy.
